Are you Required to Complete a UK Tax Return?

Published at January 26, 2024

The UK tax return self-assessment deadline of 31 January 2024 is rapidly approaching for tax returns year ended 5 April 2023, and even though you may be a Spanish resident and don’t think you are eligible to declare your taxes in the UK, you may still be obliged to complete a tax return.

A few areas to consider:

  • Do you still own property in the UK, and it is being rented out? If so, the income needs to be declared.
  • Have you sold either an investment property or what was your main home in the UK within the last tax year? If so, we can advise on any potential tax that might be payable because of these disposals.
  • Are your tax affairs in the UK behind and you are being chased by HMRC? If so, we can help you get their income tax returns up to date.

If you are unsure of whether you should be preparing UK tax returns, please do get in touch and we can advise as to whether you should be or not.

We can also provide any tax advice if you are considering returning to the UK on a permanent basis, or if you return to the UK whilst being a resident in Spain, we can guide you on how often and for how long you should return to mitigate any potential income tax liabilities in any given financial year.
